Lawsuit alleges surf teammate assault as William Frey sues Long Beach Unified School District

“We’re going to ruin your life,” surf teammates allegedly yelled as they illegally entered William Frey’s home through a broken back door, the New York Post reported, describing details laid out in a lawsuit and related court papers. ^[1]

The suit alleges that Owen Keller returned to the home with Samuel Katz and Joseph Ziroli before the confrontation escalated. ^[1] Once inside, Katz and Keller allegedly assaulted Frey, repeatedly punching him in the head and then kicking him 15–20 times each, court papers say. ^[1]

The filing also describes an earlier threat attributed to Keller: “Tell that motherf—-r that if you’re with him I’m going to beat the s–t out of him because I’m not f—-n playing.” ^[1]

The lawsuit frames the incident as a brutal beating carried out by two fellow surfing team members, including Keller, in April 2025 in Long Beach. ^[1] Frey is suing the Long Beach Unified School District, alleging the district failed to protect him. ^[1]

Court papers also say Ziroli recorded the assault. ^[1] But Ziroli’s father, David Ziroli, said his son did not take part in the beating. ^[1]
